Walkley 1970s Photos

Ken Dash took the following photographs while living in Walkley in the late 1970s.

I arrived in Sheffield in October 1976 to study for a degree in Prehistory and Archaeology. I found a place to stay in Cundy Street, Walkley within a few days and I stayed there until the end of my University course in June 1979. I liked Walkley straight away. The people were welcoming and I remember spending time in local shops, chatting to shopkeepers, something you could never do in London, where I had been living before. Walkley seemed to have its own identity. Some people called it ‘the village’. Perhaps it was the large number of pubs, perhaps it was the uniform architecture of the houses. I never quite got to the bottom of it but there was a feeling that you lived in a community.
