Walkley History

News, events and discoveries of the Walkley Ways, Walkley Wars history project.

Going to school, 1953

Going to school, 1953

Walking to school in my bruised and battered shoes.

My coat is thin as a sheet of paper, not keeping me warm at all.

My legs freezing cold feel like my shorts are going to fall off.

My woolly bag feels like the bottom of it is going to fall off and all my school stuff is going to fall out.

Walk into the old dusty, foggy playground,

All the girls playing patacake

And all the boys playing with an old leather ball.

Go into the classroom

Witness my friend getting hit with a slipper

Bruises everywhere

Girl getting hit with a ruler

Turning the colour of a flare.
