A Poem in response to Nine Men, Nine Lives, One Great War

Siobhan Hoyes writes…

After seeing the moving display in Beeches I have written a reflection dedicated to the nine men whose names are remembered on the memorial windows.

War a glorious business, an exciting adventure,

A chance to be a man.

The Somme a strip of murdered nature.

Smashed up wood, churned up soil, men digging deeper, into the earth.

We will remember you, nine men, nine lives given, valiantly for your country.

We will remember you when we see clusters of delicate, vibrant crimson poppies wafting in the gentle breeze.

We will remember.
