We are holding a series of monthly Friday evening history talks in Walkley over the coming six months. Each will be on a subject about Walkley’s past or a wider subject relating to the suburb’s history.

18th October 2013, St Mary’s Community Hall, South Road, 7 – 9pm.

Saving Walkley with Narendra Bajaria, Geoff Green and Veronica Hardstaff.

Geoff will talk about the Walkley Action Group’s campaign to prevent slum clearance demolition and redevelopment, Veronica on taking the campaign to the council as a Walkley councillor and Narendra on the 1970s Improvements Scheme. Each will talk for 10 – 15 mins on their involvement, followed by Q&As.

The following talks are in Ruskin Hall, Walkley Community Centre, 7a Fir St, 7 – 9pm.

8th November 2013 – Martin Olive. ‘Walkley Land Societies’.

13th December 2013 – Peter Warr. ‘Sheffield Life in World War One’.

10th January 2014 –Chris Hobbs. ‘Sheffield’s Shocking Past – Forgotten Tales of Murder, Mishap & Gruesome Misdemeanour’

14th February 2014 –Hugh Waterhouse. ‘Third Class Grave – Rich and poor  in Walkley’s Victorian Cemetery’.

14th March 2014 –Walkley Historians. ‘The Life and Times of Walkley Reform Club’s First World War Soldiers’.

The Community Centre plans to run a bar/café for these talks at Fir St.
