Walkley History

News, events and discoveries of the Walkley Ways, Walkley Wars history project.

Historians’ Meeting

Last night’s Walkley Historians Meeting was a very stimulating and exciting event. We are making great progress on the different strands.

Members of the World War 1 group are all discovering fascinating facts out about the Reform Club members who fought and died on the front. The Reform Club and Fir St group are transcribing the Club’s archive and beginning to get into the census data for Fit St.

A large table of Walkley life researchers and oral historians began sharing information, discoveries and memories to tie in direct recollections of South Rd shops with information from street directories and photographs. We showed a sideshow of photographs of building demolition during the 1970s Improvements Scheme, taken by Sheffield City Council surveyors.

Welcome to the new historians who came along last night – Carol and Kevan. Carol was able to help bring alive the shops identified in street directories. Kevan had valuable family information on grandparents who lived on Elton St, one of the streets we will make out for Ruskin Park Fun Day on the 6th July.

Hope to see you all again 7pm, on Wednesday 29th May at Walkley Community Centre.
